Sharmila Gupta is a specialist in laparoscopic surgery and a consultant colorectal and general surgeon based in Colchester, Essex. She has 25 years’ experience in the health service and is currently the clinical lead for surgery at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT), which is the largest NHS trust in East Anglia.

Clinics

Miss Gupta runs a flexible and convenient clinic for private patients at the Oaks Hospital in Colchester. During your appointment, Miss Gupta will ask about your symptoms and family history, and may also carry out a physical examination or ask for further tests to take place.

Miss Gupta will then discuss your diagnosis with you and answer any questions you may have, as well as explaining your treatment options.

Endoscopy

Miss Gupta regularly carries out different types of endoscopy to diagnose and treat various conditions. The lead for endoscopy at the Oaks Hospital, she has particular expertise in upper GI endoscopy, which focuses on the food pipe, stomach and part of the small intestine, and in colonoscopy, which looks at the large intestine.

Miss Gupta has also taught on training sessions to share her knowledge with other endoscopists across the UK.

Surgery

Miss Gupta offers surgery for a wide range of general and colorectal conditions, including bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and diverticular disease. She also operates on fistulas and haemorrhoids, as well as offering hernia repair and gallbladder surgery.

Miss Gupta graduated from the Medical School of St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London in 1995 before completing extensive higher training around the world. This began with surgical training on the Cambridge rotation and specialist colorectal training at St Mark’s Hospital in London, before she further developed her clinical and surgical skills in Leuven, Belgium and at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

A specialist in laparoscopic surgery, Miss Gupta has been a consultant surgeon at Colchester Hospital since 2010. She is also Colchester’s lead for surgery and lead inflammatory bowel disease surgeon. In 2017, Miss Gupta was elected as a staff governor at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, where she represents the views of her colleagues and patients to the Board. Away from the NHS, she holds the position of endoscopy lead at Oaks Hospital in Colchester.

Miss Gupta has a keen interest in education and teaching, and regularly develops training programmes to share her knowledge and expertise with laparoscopic surgeons both in the UK and abroad. She has worked with UK-based training team Lapco International on projects in Norway, Denmark, the USA, Bulgaria and Poland, and regularly teaches at the world-renowned ICENI Centre for laparoscopic surgery.
